The meeting follows on from the AGMs of both organisations in April which gave the go ahead for the two organisations to unite. The SRA and SCA have effectively been operating closely together since April and this has been working well, with the same people involved in leading both organisations. However before taking the final, formal steps to join forces we needed approval from the Charity Commission to broaden the charity’s activities. This has taken some time but is now complete. The next step is for members to vote on the necessary changes.
The changes are complex as a charity and non-charity cannot “merge” in law. However, a charity can have a non-charity as a subsidiary, so these changes would bring the SRA under the control of the SCA trustees. The existing charity will be renamed the Saltdean Residents and Community Association with enhanced charitable objects. This means the SRCA will continued to have all the major tax benefits of being a charity: every pound raised will go much further. However the SRA is not abolished. It will continue alongside the charity, to take on activities (such as lobbying on planning applications) that a charity can’t do.
